Watching a new investment portfolio drop nearly 10% within days of buying can make anyone question whether they made a mistake. That's exactly what happened to one beginner investor after a basket of technology and AI-related stocks fell sharply, leaving them down more than 9% and wondering whether they had picked the wrong companies or simply entered the market at the wrong time.

The investor shared their portfolio on Reddit, showing about $5,800 invested across Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA), Micron Technology Inc. (NASDAQ:MU), Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (NYSE:TSM), Marvell Technology Inc. (NASDAQ:MRVL), Credo Technology Group Holding Ltd. (NASDAQ:CRDO), Vertiv Holdings Co. (NYSE:VRT), Corning Inc. (NYSE:GLW), Nokia Oyj (NYSE:NOK) and HIVE Digital Technologies Ltd. (NASDAQ:HIVE).

They asked a simple question: "Is it the wrong picks or just bad timing?"

The most common response from investors in the Reddit thread was surprisingly supportive. Many said the problem wasn't necessarily the companies they bought, but when they bought them.

"Great picks, horrible timing," one commenter wrote. Another agreed, saying, "Great picks. Timing bad."

Several users noted that most of the portfolio was tied to artificial intelligence, semiconductors and data center infrastructure. Those stocks had delivered massive gains before recently pulling back, leaving newer investors feeling like they had bought at exactly the wrong moment.

Others were less optimistic. "You bought stocks that if a bubble would burst, many of them could have up to a 70% downside," one commenter warned. Another argued that the investor was simply "buying the news" after much of the excitement had already been priced in.

Still, the majority of replies suggested that a 9% decline wasn't unusual, especially for investors concentrated in high-growth technology stocks.

The investor admitted one mistake.

"Yes I feel like I start buying and everything goes down," they wrote. "I didn't split out my buying with intervals."
